Who wore it best? We’ve all seen the magazine spreads showing Rihanna wearing a dress one way and Beyonce wearing a (really similar looking) dress another. Well listen up, because you don’t need a couture consultant or celebrity stylist to make your look original. All it takes is a little imagination and some smart additions for you to really own a dress. Here are three ways to dramatically transform the gown you’ve gotten your hands on:
1. Choose a Jacket or Wrap
Your outer layer should be more than just a weather buffer. Think of it as part of your entire ensemble. Sport a cropped bolero or a flowing cloak to add a dynamic flourish to your look (and for warmth when you step outside for a kiss under the stars).
2. Wear the Right Shoes
Obviously you’re not going barefoot, but the right pair of shoes can elevate a dress from boardwalk casual or elevated workwear to gala-worthy glamour. Heels are ideal for a dazzling prom gown, but if you’re a sucker for comfort and go chunky, metallics can make all the difference. Ballet flats should be as bare as possible—really just a tiny little slipper—in flesh-toned or metallic satin, or ultra-thin leather. Brocade, intricate embroidery, and jewels can make shoes feel too princessy, so check your look so you don’t show up looking Disney.
3. Add a Beautiful Belt
Sometimes a belt can add a certain “je ne sais quoi” (that’s French for hotness) to an already fabulous dress. Cinch the waist with a narrow, bejeweled strap or make a statement with a wide, corset-style belt of leather. Just make sure that you don’t interfere with the lines of the dress, or the way it falls. You’re going for Audrey Hepburn, not Captain Hook.
That’s our thinking on the subject. Keep it in mind, give it a whirl, get second opinions from your girlfriends. The Big Night’s fast approaching!
