Fashion Club has partnered with Caché on our exclusive prom trends blog series. Here's what they have to say about accessories for prom!
Great accessories can transform even a pair of overalls into a chic ensemble (well, almost). So don’t make the mistake of thinking your dress will speak for itself. Plus, picking shoes and jewelry and trying different hairstyles is half the fun!
That said, don’t overdo it. If you’re wearing a fabulous gown (which we know you are) your accessories should enhance not overwhelm. Follow these simple guidelines and you’ll look Belle of the Ball beautiful.
If you're wearing a statement necklace, small stud-like earrings and a simple bracelet are best. If you're wearing chandelier earrings, skip the necklace altogether and wear bolder bracelets. If you're going for a classic princess look, try smaller sparkly earrings, a simple solitaire-style necklace and a single thin bracelet.
More than just a way to carry your barest beauty necessities, the clutch can be a statement piece that brings a less elaborate dress to life or a subtle grace note that has people cooing over your pitch-perfect style. Pick something and easy to hold onto. Little, glittery bags can look like jewelry. Candy colors and polished metal are beautiful. But never match your shoe and bag color to your dress unless it’s black – too much matchy-matchy says bridesmaid.
High heels, obviously! We know, they can be uncomfortable but they make your legs look longer and thinner, which is sexier, period. The thinner the sole and the spikier the heel, the greater the potential discomfort, so if you're no Carrie Bradshaw, choose styles with platforms under the ball of the foot, or a sturdier heel. An amateur on heels is easy to spot so practice at home in your dress and shoes! If you can’t make heels work, your best choice is a simple ballet flat in a metallic shade that complements your skin tone and looks practically invisible, like on a ballerina. Lastly, don’t mix metals: silver and gold jewelry and copper shoes is a recipe for fashion fail.
Up or down? That is the question. And you’ll want to answer it before the Big Night, because futzing with your hair makes innocent bystanders crazy draws attention away from amazing you. A sleek up-do shows off a long neck and decolletage for an elegant effect. Letting it fall naturally, with just a simple spray and wave, for example can be feminine and sensual.
Get it? Good. We’ll be back next week. Until then, happy prom prep!
