Inspired by...Elie Saab Spring 2012

From the bold colors and fluttery silhouettes to the up-to-there slits and sparkling sequins, Elie Saab's Spring 2012 collection was all about the drama.

YELLOW

The color yellow is itself fun, playful, bright, and cheery, but in the form of an evening gown or dress it's suddenly ultra chic as well. Take this Halston Heritage Silk-Satin Maxi Dress, for instance--it's positively stunning.

Red Carpet Inspiration: 2012 Golden Globe Awards

It's hard to ignore the glitz and glamour of Hollywood award season -- the gorgeous gowns, the beautiful hair, the amazing accessories -- we love it all! The Golden Globes were last night and we're still swooning. Here are some of the night's winning looks. --Angel

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol actress Paula Patton looked flawless in a sunny yellow design by FIDM's own Monique Lhuillier.

 

Ringer actress Sarah Michelle Gellar looked stunning in full, printed gown from FIDM Grad Monique Lhuillier's Spring 2012 collection.

 

We love the playful color and silhouette of Modern Family star Ariel Winter's Dolce & Gabbana frock. Wouldn't it be simply fantastic for Prom?

 

Katherine McPhee, one of the evening's presenters, accessorized her embroidered Donna Karan dress with platform stilettos and a Judith Leiber minaudiere, all in a neutral palette.

 

There was so much to love about Charlize Theron's look -- the dress of course, a Dior Couture design, but we absolutely j'adored the vintage Cartier headband too!

 

The Help actress Viola Davis was lucky enough to have Italian label Emilio Pucci make this insanely chic, bourdeaux gown just for her...we're just a bit jealous.

 

Evan Rachel Wood was the picture of glamour in a sequin and feather embellished gown by Gucci.

 

Homeland star Claire Danes worked it on the red carpet, rocking a black J. Mendel column accessorized with a bold red lip.

 

Reese Witherspoon presented in a scarlet-hued Zac Posen design which she paired with beachy waves.

 

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara has been having an "It" girl moment as she promotes her film. Last night she was flawless in Nina Ricci.

 

The always impeccable Angelina Jolie was gorgeous in a white Atelier Versace gown with a red foldover trim and lips and bag to match.

 

Presenter Freida Pinto couldn't have been more beautiful in peacock blue Prada, which she accessorized with loads of gold and diamonds.

 

Nominated for her role in Mildred Pierce, Kate Winslet channeled Old Hollywood in a va-va-va-voom black and white gown from Jenny Packham.

 

Glee's Amber Riley chose a strapless, ruffle-front design by design duo Badgley Mischka. We love the sideswept bang!

 

Somehow Natalie Portman gets prettier and prettier with each red carpet appearance. Last night she was a vision in a strapless fuchsia gown by Lanvin.

 

Indie cutie Zooey Deschanel was all-out glamorous in silk Prada studded with ebony and emerald glass pearls.

 

Mila Kunis looked picture perfect in a black silk and tulle gown by Christian Dior. We love how the actress accented the look with sleek hair and shimmery, barely-there makeup.

 

The Help actress Emma Stone complemented her famous red locks with a romantic, aubergine gown from Lanvin.

 

American Horror Story star Taissa Farmiga kept her hair and makeup simple so all eyes were on her ruched strapless gown.

 

My Week with Marilyn star Michelle Williams chose a velvet embroidered gown by designer-of-the-moment Jason Wu, accessorized with an adorable headband.

 

Actress Jessica Alba presented in a lavender Gucci gown with shimmery embroidery, matched with pale shimmery makeup.

 

Modern Family's Sarah Hyland was fetching and glamorous and all things lovely in vintage Dior (does it even get more fabulous than that?) and a sideswept updo.

Red Carpet Inspiration: 2012 People's Choice Awards

The 2012 People's Choice Awards were last night. As always, we picked out a few of our favorite looks from the red carpet, and we think you'll agree they are the perfect inspiration for Prom. --Angel

The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence chose a bold design by Viktor & Rolf.

 

Footloose star Julianne Hough sparkled in a backless Kaufmanfranco dress.

 

Actress Tia Mowry was radiant in a drapey Collette Dinnigan gown.

 

And Mowry's twin sister, Tamera, was sweet and sassy in an LBD by Nina

 

Also in an LBD, 2 Broke Girls star Kat Dennings, adding a bold, red lip to complete the look.

 

Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson chose a girly design by Alice + Olivia.

Match Your Lip Color to Your Dress

Here's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara looking absolutely stunning in a scarlet Valentino gown at the Rome premiere of her film. We love how she's matched her lip color to that vibrant red dress -- totally brill! Inspired by...Monique Lhuillier Spring 2012

It's never too early to start thinking about Prom. In fact, we've been thinking about Prom 2012 since Prom 2011! To get things jumping, we're starting a new feature where we highlight Prom looks inspired by the Spring 2012 collections of some of our favorite designers. Who better to kick off the series than FIDM Grad Monique Lhuillier? --Angel

FLOOR-SWEEPING

It wouldn't be Prom without full, floor-sweeping gowns. For her spring collection, Lhuillier did harness detailing, colorblocking, and an insanely cool inky print. You can do something equally unexpected with a bold color, like this Max & Cleo Strapless Gown.

 

FIFTIES

 

Sweet and flirty, but with just the right amount of sophistication, '50s-inspired dresses are always a favorite Prom trend. We love the edgy grafitti print we saw at the Monique Lhuillier runway show, but we also adore a floral print, like this BB Dakota Clarissa Jacquard Dress.

MERMAID

When it comes to glamour there are few things more glamorous than Old Hollywood-style mermaid gowns. Lhuillier stuck with primary colors and did it with ruching, draping, and lots of tulle, but you can also find tons of styles with ruffles, pleats, or a hint of shimmer, like this Halle Prom Dress from Windsor.

Actress Olivia Wilde is rarely found on anything but the best-dressed list, and for good reason: the stylish star chose a design from FIDM Grad Monique Lhuillier's Spring 2012 collection for a big night at the Palm Springs Film Festival. The black gown was chic and sophisticated in front, but when the star turned around the look's edgier, more playful side was revealed--a lace racerback and up-to-there slit. --Angel
