Dear Fashion Girl,
I don't know what kind of dress to wear! I'm very skinny and I don't have any hips, I'm completely straight like a ruler! What dress style will help me look curvier and more like a girl than a boy?
Dear Lucy -
Adding curves to a boyish frame is actually quite simple, so don't worry! The trick is to look for dresses that are designed to add volume (think bubble hems, full skirts, or tiers, for example).
The Strapless Cocktail Dress by Scala, $178 (pictured above left) works for several reasons: 1) it has a sash to cinch the waist, which will naturally give you a little curve at the hip, 2) tiers at the hips and upper thigh give the illusion of a fuller frame, 3) the embellished bodice will draw the eye upward (so people will be looking at your lovely face!).
A dress with an empire waist is another great option because it will have a babydoll silhouette that flares from the ribcage. This As U Wish Bow Dress, $68 (pictured right) works perfectly for your body type for that very reason.
The bubble hemline and side hike-ups on the Ruby Rox Purple Bubble Dress, $60 (pictured left) really give the illusion of sexy curves, plus the bust is slightly padded with ruching detail to give you more of an hourglass shape.
Try on several dresses in the different styles listed above, and move around in them to make sure they're suitable for dancing the night away. When you've got your choices narrowed down, buy the dress that makes you feel beautiful!
Have fun at Homecoming! --Angel
